Escola Luís de Camões Students Celebrate Portuguese Culture Through Famous Figures Day

On Saturday, May 30, the Newark Campus of Escola Luís de Camões organized a very special lesson at the Sport Club Português hall, bringing together students, teachers, and the school community for a morning dedicated to Portuguese history, culture, and identity.

As part of the activity, students selected important Portuguese figures and prepared short presentations to share with the entire school. One by one, students stepped forward to introduce their chosen personalities, explaining who they were, why they were important, and how they contributed to Portugal and Portuguese culture.

The presentations featured a wonderful variety of figures, including Amália Rodrigues, the iconic voice of fado; Inês de Castro, one of the most famous figures in Portuguese history; Rosa Mota, the legendary Olympic marathon champion; and even the beloved entertainer Quim Barreiros. The activity gave students the opportunity to research, speak in front of their peers, and connect in a meaningful way with Portugal’s rich heritage.

A jury selected the best presentation of the day, and the winner was Anthony Aversano, who dressed as Quim Barreiros and delivered a fun, confident, and memorable presentation that captured everyone’s attention.

The special lesson also included a private visit to the Sport Club Português Museum, where students had the opportunity to learn more about the history of the 104-year-old Portuguese club and the important role it has played in preserving Portuguese culture in Newark and supporting the Portuguese community for generations.

This special day was more than just a classroom activity. It was a celebration of language, culture, history, and community. Through projects like this, Escola Luís de Camões continues to help students build a strong connection to Portugal, their heritage, and the stories that have shaped the Portuguese people around the world.
