At Escola Luís de Camões – Warren Campus, we are always looking for ways to bring the richness of Portuguese culture to our students, and on February 21st, they experienced something truly special! Our students had the exciting opportunity to learn about the concertina, a beloved Portuguese instrument that fills festivals and celebrations with its unmistakable sound. And what better way to end the day than with a lively dance to its cheerful melodies?
What is the Concertina?
The concertina is a small, hand-held accordion-like instrument that plays a central role in traditional Portuguese folk music. It is especially popular in the Minho region, where it is the heartbeat of traditional dances like the vira and chula. The instrument’s lively and rhythmic sound brings people together, making it a staple at festas, romarias, and folk gatherings throughout Portugal.
Bringing Portuguese Culture to Warren
At Escola Luís de Camões, we believe that learning a language goes beyond the classroom—it’s about embracing the traditions, music, and heritage that make it come alive! That’s why we make it a priority to bring cultural experiences like this to our students.
Throughout the class, students were able to see, hear, and even try playing the concertina, discovering firsthand the joy and energy it brings. The excitement in the room was contagious, and when the music started, everyone was on their feet, clapping, dancing, and celebrating in true Portuguese fashion!
This event was more than just a music lesson—it was an opportunity for our students to connect with their roots, appreciate the beauty of Portuguese traditions, and create lasting memories. As we continue our mission to preserve and promote the Portuguese language and culture, we look forward to many more enriching experiences like this at our Warren Campus!
