The Luis de Camoes Portuguese School’s Newark campus is situated at 87 Congress Street in the historic Ironbound section of Newark, New Jersey. This campus holds a significant historical value as it was purchased by Sport Club Portuguese in the 1970s to accommodate the growing number of students arriving from Portugal after the revolution.
The campus boasts six classrooms, providing ample space for students to engage in their learning journey. In 2012, the building underwent a complete renovation, bringing it up to modern standards and creating a comfortable environment for students. The facilities are designed to meet the needs of students, ensuring they have the necessary resources and amenities to enhance their educational experience.
One notable feature of the campus is the large tile mural adorning the front of the building. This mural, painted in Portugal and donated to the school in the 1990s, adds a touch of cultural significance and serves as a visual representation of the school’s connection to Portuguese heritage and artistry.
The Newark campus is conveniently located within close proximity to Ferry Street, also known as Portugal Avenue in Newark. This vibrant area offers a rich cultural atmosphere, allowing students to further immerse themselves in Portuguese traditions, cuisine, and community.
Before the utilization of the current building, the school was located at the Sport Club Portuguese building. The move to the dedicated campus on Congress Street provided an opportunity for expansion and improvement, enabling the school to better serve its students and fulfill its educational mission.
